The Secrets Behind Healing with Manuka Honey

Honey has been used as a natural medicine for centuries. Prior to the advent of antibiotics and other traditional forms of medicine, honey was commonly used to treat infections and promote wound healing.

All types of honey have some levels of healing properties. However, Manuka Honey from New Zealand seems to have the highest levels of these healing properties, more so than any other honey in the world. Manuka Honey is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic. It also has very powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it extremely useful in treating a wide range of health problems.

Studies have shown that Manuka honey is an effective treatment for wounds, burns, insect bites, eczema, bacterial and fungal infections, psoriasis, ulcers, sore throats, gastrointestinal disorders, arthritis, etc. There are also no side effects when using Manuka Honey like those you can experience when using antibiotics or other drugs. Manuka honey is excellent for stomach aches, indigestion, cough, cold and flu symptoms, etc. It can also be used to cure insomnia.

An enzyme is present in honey that produces low levels of hydrogen peroxide, which can be used as a disinfectant. This is one reason why honey has such a high antimicrobial activity. Hydrogen peroxide is also partly responsible for regulating oxygen supply to skin cells, which helps to hasten the healing process. Manuka honey provides a protective barrier over wounds without damaging the skin or interfering with the healing process. It contains vital nutrients that are needed for the regeneration of skin tissue. The amino acids, minerals, vitamins and sugars present in Manuka Honey stimulate collagen production in as well as supporting the growth of new capillaries. The pH level of Manuka Honey also promotes wound healing and the eradication of infectious bacteria.

In addition to its ability to produce low levels of hydrogen peroxide, Manuka honey contains other antibacterial compounds such as methylglyoxal and an otherwise unidentified component that has become known as the Unique Manuka Factor or UMF. Some producers of Manuka Honey measure its antibacterial potency by rating the UMF. The range is from 0 - 30. Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 0 through 9 is not active and should not be used for medicinal purposes. Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 10 through 16 is considered to be active and suitable for therapeutic use. Manuka Honey that is more potent than UMF 20 is overly potent and can cause a burning or stinging sensation. Manuka Honey UMF 16+ is most recommended and is ideal for most applications.

For internal conditions, such as stomach ulcers, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, etc., it is recommended to take Manuka Honey orally, 3-4 times per day, most preferably before meals. If eating it off a spoon is not desirable, you can also spread it on a piece of bread or toast and eat it. Once symptoms are eliminated, you can reduce usage to once a day for maintenance purposes. For topical use on the skin, it is recommended to apply Manuka Honey, or a skin care product that contains Manuka Honey, directly to the affected area 1-2 times per day until the symptoms are eliminated.

Manuka Honey is truly a miracle of nature. It can be used as a natural medicine or for cosmetic purposes. Please remember that infants under the age of 12 months old should not ingest honey of any kind because their immune system is not fully mature and will not be able to handle the spores that are sometimes present in some honeys. Although, using Manuka Honey topically on the skin is perfectly safe for children of all ages. It is also safe for mothers to ingest honey if they are breast feeding. If you are planning on using Manuka Honey for medicinal purposes, make sure it has a UMF rating of 10 - 16. Anything less is not potent enough and anything more is too potent. Look for the "UMF" registered trademark on the label. This indicates that the honey is regulated and laboratory tested for its antibacterial potency.

Manuka Honey and Wound Care

Many reports indicate that Manuka Honey is an extremely effective first aid resource for cuts, grazes, gashes, burns and other wounds.

Derived from the nectar of the flowers that grow on the Manuka tree, native to New Zealand, Manuka Honey is gaining ever increasing worldwide recognition for its healing properties. There are many ways in which Manuka Honey can be used, particularly for topical use on the skin. There is growing anecdotal evidence that Manuka Honey is effective for therapeutic use, even against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as MRSA. Manuka Honey has shown great promise in the treatment of wounds, leg ulcers and burns.

The use of Manuka Honey for wound care is the area receiving the most attention from researchers. It is important to know that all honey has some antibacterial activity that is effective in the treatment of wounds, primarily due to the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The additional healing properties found in bio-active Manuka Honey (such as UMF and methylglyoxal) make it even more suitable for medical use. Not only can Manuka Honey destroy existing bacteria in an infected wound, but it also creates a protective barrier over the wound area, preventing more bacteria from entering.

With the range of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, trace elements and sugar, Manuka Honey has a positive nutrient effect on newly regenerating tissue in a healing wound. Equally important in regard to new tissue growth in wounds, is the process of changing dressings. Wound dressings containing Manuka Honey create a moist healing environment that prevents direct contact between the dressing and newly formed tissue so that damage or disturbance to it is reduced from the changing of dressings.

More serious wounds such as Leg ulcers are a frustrating occurrence that can detrimentally affect mobility if worsened. The same healing properties that make Manuka Honey effective for the treatment of wounds also apply to leg ulcers. There are many anecdotal reports indicating that active Manuka Honey is effective in treating leg ulcers that were not responding to conventional treatments. It has also been noted that Manuka Honey is successful at reducing the malodor associated with leg ulcers and chronic wounds.

Manuka Honey’s effectiveness in healing and preventing infection is also helpful for the treatment of burns. A reduction of pain associated with burns has also been reported, due to the anti-inflammatory properties present in Manuka Honey. As part of Manuka Honey's ability to keep a wound area moist and its positive nutrient effect on tissue regeneration, it also helps to reduce scarring by lifting scabs and dead tissue, allowing the burn or wound to heal flush with the surface of the skin.

If the idea of using honey on your skin is not desirable, there is a viable solution. A company called Honeymark has developed a line of skin care products containing UMF Active Manuka Honey as a healing agent. "Honeymark products take the sticky mess out of applying Manuka Honey directly to wounds or other skin conditions," says Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International. "In addition to medical-grade active Manuka Honey, there are also other helpful ingredients in our products that gives you the edge over using plain Manuka Honey to treat a wound or burn."

Using Manuka Honey to Treat Burns

A special type of honey known as Manuka Honey is now being used to effectively treat burns due to its ability to repair damaged skin.

There are many different kinds of burns. Burns can be caused by heat, cold, steam, light, radiation, friction, electric, chemicals, the sun, etc. With any type of burn, there is damage to the skin which is, in essence, a wound that needs to be healed and repaired during proper treatment.

Most burns are usually classified into 3 degrees, predicated on the depth of the skin damage. First degree burns are burns that affect the top layer of the skin, for example a blister or sun burn. Second degree burns are more serious in that deeper layers of the skin are affected, causing damage to the nerve endings and sweat glands. Third degree burns are when the fat layer, including nerves, muscles and blood vessels are affected. Fourth, fifth and sixth degree burns are far more serious.

Medical professionals are now using a special type of honey known as 'Manuka Honey' to treat burns. Manuka Honey contains healing properties found in the nectar of a particular floral source, indigenous to New Zealand. Manuka Honey is effective in treating burns for several reasons. Since a burn is technically a wound, Manuka Honey's antibacterial activity protects the burn from becoming infected. It also has the ability to repair damaged skin and regenerate new tissue. Manuka Honey also contains anti-inflammatory properties which helps in reducing the pain associated with burns.

Because Manuka Honey is so effective in treating burns, it is now being used as a main ingredient in burn treatment products. Honeymark's First Aid Antiseptic Lotion is sold as an over-the-counter wound and burn treatment and contains Active Manuka Honey as a healing agent. "Manuka Honey is being taken very seriously in the U.S. now that new research is proving its effectiveness," says Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International. "Manuka Honey is an all-natural ingredient that has achieved great success in the treatment wounds and burns because of its amazing healing properties."

Manuka Honey Benefits

Derived from a floral source indigenous to New Zealand, this special type of honey is effective in destroying microorganisms responsible for many negative health conditions.

Honey was originally used for medical purposes due to its antibacterial properties. However, it was replaced by antibiotics and other forms of traditional medicine in the 1940s and 1950s. Due to recent studies, there is now an increasing interest in honey as a topical antibacterial agent for the treatment of infected wounds, burns, eczema, ringworm and other bacterial and fungal infections.

The antibacterial properties of honey are a result of its high levels of sugar, acidity, osmolarity and hydrogen peroxide content. Manuka Honey is different in that its antibacterial activity is not only attributed to hydrogen peroxide, but also plant-derived components, such as methylglyoxal and what some experts refer to as the Unique Manuka Factor or UMF.

Wounds in laboratory studies were healed more rapidly by wound dressings containing Manuka Honey than by using standard types of honey. The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is also very susceptible to the antibacterial activity of Manuka Honey, making it a valuable resource in treating MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

The antimicrobial activity of Manuka Honey has been observed in many studies around the world. It has been discovered that Manuka Honey is effective in destroying the following bacterial and fungal microorganisms:

  • Escherichia coli
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Citrobacter freundii
  • Proteus mirabilis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Salmonella typhimurium
  • Streptococcus faecalis
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Helicobacter Pylori

Research also indicates that Manuka Honey inhibits enzymes called cysteine proteases, which have been implicated in muscle-wasting diseases such as muscular dystrophy, viral replication, tumor invasion and metastasis.

"Manuka Honey is the best thing to happen to the medical industry in decades," says Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International, which is manufacturer of skin care products containing Active Manuka Honey as a healing agent. "At a time when consumers are losing faith in pharmaceuticals and gaining faith in natural alternatives, Manuka Honey is gaining its well-deserved recognition."

Manuka Honey vs. Bacterial and Fungal Infection

A unique kind of honey contains powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that make it incredibly effective in combating the microorganisms responsible for infecting wounds and causing a variety of other medical conditions.

The Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium) is a plant, native to New Zealand, that blooms flowers producing a unique nectar that bees use to manufacture a very special type of honey. This honey is known as 'Manuka Honey' and has been used as a natural medicine for many years to treat a variety of different health conditions such as eczema, ringworm, wounds and burns. Recent studies have shown that the antibacterial activity of Manuka Honey is extremely effective, even more so than pharmaceuticals with no side effects. It contains natural antimicrobial properties that quicken the healing process and reduce scarring in badly infected wounds.

Researchers have found that wounds heal faster when treated with Manuka Honey dressings in comparison to traditional antiseptics. It has been discovered that Manuka Honey can provide a viable solution to many people living with skin and hair conditions. Dr. Peter Molan, Associate Professor in Biochemistry at the University of Waikato in New Zealand agrees that Manuka Honey has great healing qualities because of its enhanced antibacterial potency, which has become known as the Unique Manuka Factor or UMF. Its antibacterial potency is even effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as MRSA and VRE.

Medical Research has shown that Manuka Honey had an 85% success rate in healing infected wounds, in compared to a 50% success rate of conventional treatments. Manuka Honey is naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and protein which contribute to it's ability to repair damaged hair and skin. Manuka Honey’s antibacterial properties are soothing and can prevent acne, eczema, psoriasis and skin infections.

"The healing properties found in Manuka Honey far supersede that of which can be found in your average health care products sold over-the-counter in pharmacies," says Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International which is a manufacturer of Manuka Honey products. "Our products have been achieving better results when used to treat conditions such as eczema, arthritis, ringworm, athlete's foot and wounds. Unlike many pharmaceuticals, Manuka Honey is a natural ingredient that has been found to have no negative side effects."
